Dissolved organic carbon export with North Pacific Intermediate Water formation

چکیده
[1] An evaluation of DOC export with the formation of North Pacific Intermediate Water is presented. Data from sites representing the relevant North Pacific water masses (subtropical, subpolar, and subtropical transitional) are used to demonstrate the process. We suggest that dissolved organic carbon (DOC)-replete Oyashio (subpolar) water mixes with DOC-depleted Kuroshio (subtropical) water in the mixed water region east of Japan. The new intermediate water, formed at a rate of 2–5 Sv, exports DOC at 13 ± 6 Tg DOC yr . On the basis of these findings we present an alternative model to explain the C-DOC age gradient recently reported for intermediate depths of the North Pacific.

Removing the North Pacific halocline: Effects on global climate, ocean circulation and the carbon cycle
A well-pronounced halocline is a key feature of today’s subarctic North Pacific. There is indirect paleoevidences from the last glacial termination as well as from the early and middle Pliocene that this halocline has not always been there. To study the effects of North Pacific salinity on global climate, ocean circulation and the marine carbon cycle, we perform idealized experiments using an E...
متن کاملOrganic matter transformations in the upper mesopelagic zone of the North Pacific: Chemical composition and linkages to microbial community structure
[1] Transformation processes in the euphotic and mesopelagic zones are of crucial importance to the biological pump and global elemental cycles. In this study, elemental stoichiometries and chemical compositions of particulate and dissolved organic matter (DOM) were investigated in the euphotic and upper mesopelagic zones of the North Pacific Subtropical Gyre. The distributions of bacterial bio...
متن کاملTransport and diagenesis of dissolved and particulate terrigenous organic matter in the North Pacific Ocean
Lignin measurements were made on suspended particulate organic matter (POM), total dissolved organic matter (DOM), high-molecular-weight (HMW) DOM, and low-molecular-weight (LMW) DOM in the North Pacific at Station Aloha. Carbon-normalized yields of lignin and dC measurements indicate that while terrigenous organic matter accounts only for B1% of DOM in seawater, submicron POM has a substantial...
متن کاملDissolved Organic Carbon in the North Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation
The quantitative role of the Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation (AMOC) in dissolved organic carbon (DOC) export is evaluated by combining DOC measurements with observed water mass transports. In the eastern subpolar North Atlantic, both upper and lower limbs of the AMOC transport high-DOC waters. Deep water formation that connects the two limbs of the AMOC results in a high downward ex...
متن کاملIn situ calcium carbonate dissolution in the Pacific Ocean
[1] Over the past several years researchers have been working to synthesize the WOCE/ JGOFS global CO2 survey data to better understand carbon cycling processes in the oceans. The Pacific Ocean data set has over 35,000 sample locations with at least two carbon parameters, oxygen, nutrients, CFC tracers, and hydrographic parameters. In this paper we estimate the in situ CaCO3 dissolution rates i...
